It’s normal and happens to the best of us. Our bodies age whether we’re a professional athlete, supermodel or working a nine to five job. Our hands are one of the first places to show the signs of getting older, and this is more visible in women and a cosmetic concern for many.
Enlarged hand veins can also develop via our genetics, and with general aging, they appear due to lost skin volume on the hands.
Treatment of Hand Veins
Vascular science has come a long way and made tremendous strides in the treatment of varicose veins, which can safely treated and painlessly be removed, delivering smoother, tauter and younger looking hands.
A consultation with our leading cosmetic team is your first step. Sameh Dimitri is a highly regarded vascular and endovascular surgeon in the UK. His expertise focuses on minimally invasive treatment for venous diseases. His nurses and laser specialists are fully qualified at what they do and treat each patient with compassion and respect in an atmosphere that is relaxing and friendly.
Your initial consultation will involve a clinical examination in addition to an ultrasound scan to identify the type of varicose veins present and guide the decision regarding the optimum treatment strategy.
Laser Treatment EVLT
EVLT stands for Endovenous Laser Therapy and is also called EVLA, Endovenous Laser Ablation. It is a modern treatment for enlarged hand veins. In simplest terms, laser energy is used to ablate or destroy the veins from the inside.
The patient is under local anesthesia during the minimally invasive procedure, so an expensive hospital stay is unnecessary. The discomfort level is low, and the entire treatment takes about 30 minutes. You can return to your daily routine within a day. Following the treatment, a hand dressing is applied and worn for a few hours to optimize the clinical outcome.
In addition, both hands can be treated during the same visit, or you can choose to schedule to have each hand treated during individual appointments.
Another innovative method targets undesirable veins through injection called foam sclerotherapy. In this method, no scan or general anesthesia is required, and downtime is brief. The benefits result when chemicals are injected into the veins you want to be removed in foam form called Fibrovein. A foam consistency delivers a greater potency than more traditional liquid sclerosant formulations. More than one treatment session is required and typically results in three sessions. Each session takes about 30 minutes.
Following the hand treatment, your doctor will provide a compression garment to wear for a few days. This step will improve results and keep pressure on the treated veins.
Foam sclerotherapy on its own does not always produce the ultimate success rate as EVLT, so the therapy is often used in conjunction with EVLT.
Both endovenous laser therapy and foam sclerotherapy treatments work very well for enlarged hand veins, are tolerated and have high patient satisfaction. The treatments deliver excellent cosmetic results, and hand function is not affected.
