Your initial consultation will involve a clinical examination in addition to an ultrasound scan to identify the type of varicose veins present and guide the decision regarding the optimum treatment strategy. Some patients with thread veins will not require ultrasound scanning.

There have been major advances over recent years in varicose vein treatment with the introduction of cyanoacrylate glue, laser therapy – EVLT, radio-frequency thermal ablation – VNUS, and foam sclerotherapy which have been shown to confer significant advantages for patients when compared with conventional surgery. Cyanoacrylate glue is the most recent innovative treatment.

Patients with thread veins, pelvic congestion syndrome, vaginal veins, breast veins and facial veins have also benefited from the new techniques. Most of these forms of varicose vein treatment are performed under a local anaesthetic as an outpatient procedure in under an hour.
