Can Fillers Be Removed or Reversed?
Are you considering enhancing your appearance with facial dermal fillers, such as lip and cheek fillers, but are concerned about not liking the results? Or have you already had fillers and are unhappy with how they look? Are you wondering if anything can be done?

Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are non-surgical cosmetic procedures that enhance facial features and plump and fill lines, grooves, or recessed areas. At Vein Solutions, we use high-quality products like Juvederm. Administered correctly by a medical professional, dermal fillers can subtly smooth, soften, contour, and tone the skin, restore youthful plumpness, and enhance and define your features.
Dermal fillers are typically made from hyaluronic acid, a biodegradable gel injected with a fine needle into the face. Hyaluronic acid closely matches a clear sugar, a highly hydrophilic substance (meaning it readily absorbs moisture) naturally produced by the body. Hyaluronic acid is mainly found in the skin, connective tissue, and eyes, keeping tissues hydrated and lubricated. A hyaluronic acid molecule can store 1,000 times its weight in water, making it the perfect plumping and moisturising agent.
After being injected under the skin, the filler integrates with the facial tissue, attracting and binding with water molecules, rehydrating the area. Lip and facial fillers are not permanent; they will dissolve naturally over time, taking 9 to 24 months due to an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which breaks down the hyaluronic acid.
If you’ve had lip fillers administered by a poorly trained practitioner or your fillers look plumper or less natural than expected, this time frame can seem too long. Fortunately, there is a professional treatment to dissolve fillers.
How Can Dermal Fillers Be Dissolved?
To dissolve fillers, a qualified and experienced practitioner can use the enzyme hyaluronidase to speed up the natural process of breaking down the injected hyaluronic acid and melting it away.
Hyaluronidase can be injected into the area with the unwanted filler, and the treatment is usually quick and straightforward. Fillers often dissolve quickly when the enzyme is applied, with results observable in minutes, although it typically takes 12 to 24 hours to achieve complete correction.
Hyaluronidase works very quickly but can have side effects, including:
- A minimal and temporary effect on the hyaluronic acid in the body, which will regrow following the treatment.
- A return to the normal features you wanted to change with fillers.
- Swelling or discomfort in the area where the enzyme was injected, lasting 2 to 3 days after the procedure.
The possibility of an immediate allergic reaction to the injection can lead to a more severe reaction if the practitioner does not detect and treat it quickly.
The process can be a bit painful, especially on sensitive lips full of nerve endings. However, an anaesthetic or numbing cream is usually applied first to help with this.
It’s imperative to have fillers dissolved by a highly qualified and experienced medical doctor with a prescription. Allowing any other type of practitioner to administer the hyaluronidase risks infection and injury.
When Can I Have Fillers Reapplied?
Fillers should not be reapplied for at least 2 to 6 weeks unless extenuating circumstances exist. After injecting hyaluronidase, the enzyme stays in the body for a while, making it challenging to judge how much or where more hyaluronic acid should be used.
Re-injection should only be done by experienced practitioners who are experts in facial anatomy and can assess the area accurately. They will need to know the type and quality of filler used and can advise the client accordingly.
